She's Arrived! LNG-Powered El Coquí Reaches San Juan, Puerto Rico, in Ship's Maiden Trip

Update: Crowley's First ConRo Ship Is Fueled

Today Crowley offers perhaps the coolest update yet in the development of two new Commitment Class, combination container/roll-on roll-off “ConRo” ships for the U.S. mainland to Puerto Rico trade: The first loads of frigid liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been safely and successfully transferred into the first ship, El Coquí.

Inside Look: Crowley’s new ConRo ship El Coquí will help shippers transport cars to and from Puerto Rico faster in modern, enclosed vehicle decks.

An important feature of Crowley’s new Commitment Class ships El Coquí and Taíno is the modern vehicle transport decks, which will allow cars, trucks and other heavy equipment to be safely and securely shipped between Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland.

Crowley’s Newest LNG-Fueled ConRo Ship, Taíno, Launched at VT Halter Marine

VT Halter Marine has launched Crowley Maritime Corp.’s second Commitment Class ship, Taíno , one of the world’s first combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Video of the ship being transferred from land to water Monday can be viewed here [ link to come].

The launch of the ship in Pascagoula, Miss., marks the latest achievement in Crowley’s transformation and modernization of its shipping and logistics services between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The new ships, port terminal improvements and technology upgrades underway are all designed to improve the overall velocity of the customers’ supply chains and speed products to retail shelves.

New LNG-Powered Ships Progress in Shipyard as Puerto Rico relief arrives on island

While Crowley teams have been working around the clock to deliver commercial and government relief supplies to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, including 3,684 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and 9,116 commercial loads to date, Crowley’s vessel construction management group has been focused on completing the company’s two new LNG-fueled "ConRo" combination Roll-on/Roll-off ships for the trade.

Finishing touches are being made to El Coquí at the VT Halter Marine shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., as she moves into the initial phases of testing and commissioning
